Earlsfield Primary School

Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Year 1  are taught by Mrs McLaughlin and Miss Warley. They are supported by Cathy and Shannel. They can be contacted via year1@earlsfield.wandsworth.sch.uk

Teacher's welcome

Welcome back to a new and thrilling year in Year 1. We are eager to get stuck into our learning with the children and look forward to getting to know you more over the phone.

We have lots of fun things lined up, which we hope the children will be inspired and enthused by.

As the children progress through Year 1, they will become more independent in their learning, developing their Reading, Writing and Maths skills. We value your support, so please continue to read with your child and support them to learn their weekly spellings.

Thank you to those parents who were able to join us for our recent Meet The Teacher. If you weren't able to join us we hope you can take the opportunity to read the slides.

If you ever have any questions, please email us at year1@earlsfield.wandsworth.sch.uk.

Autumn learning

Topic: How has our local area changed?

The children explore what is literally on their doorstep! They  begin by thinking about where they live and compare Earlsfield to other places in the United Kingdom and around the world. We will launch this topic by going on a treasure hunt in our playground, ultimately discovering a time capsule containing photos and maps of Earlsfield in the past. Using maps, children will learn to identify key features in the local environment, and use these features and symbols to create their own maps. Children will also talk about the different routes they take to and from school, identifying the different buildings and sign posts they see on their journey. During Art lessons they will learn how to simplify observations into basic geometric and organic shapes to make drawing easier. We then conclude the topic by predicting how Earlsfield might look in the future, and use junk modelling to make our own buildings!

Topic: Why do people travel?

We begin by thinking about the journeys that they make and how they get to different destinations. This will include deciding what their favourite journey is and why? Using maps and atlases, children will look at all the places in the world that they have been to and compare the different features, weather and landscapes. Art lessons will be inspired by Frank Bowling’s, the Map Paintings, where children will use images of the world map to create a painting. Children will also think about where in the world they might like to live and reasons why some people move away from their home. Children will be learning how to create a travel brochure, combining both their Literacy and Art skills.
